# Best Post Towns on Japan’s Historic Nakasendo Way

Walking Japan’s Nakasendo Way is like stepping back in time to a world of samurai, merchants, and tea-house travellers. This ancient trail once connected Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo), weaving through scenic valleys, cedar forests, and charming post towns that have remained beautifully preserved for centuries. Here are some of the best post towns you’ll encounter on Life's An Adventure's 7-day Pack-Free Nakasendo Way walk, each offering a glimpse into Japan’s cultural heart and timeless hospitality.

## Magome, The Southern Gateway

Magome marks the start (or finish) of the most picturesque section of the Nakasendo Way. With its cobbled slopes, waterwheels, and restored Edo-period buildings, it’s easy to imagine the clip-clop of horses and the bustle of merchants passing through. Explore the quaint craft shops and try gohei-mochi, skewered rice cakes coated in a sweet miso sauce.

**On our tour:** We stay nearby and take time to wander Magome’s steep lanes before beginning our scenic walk toward Tsumago.

## Tsumago. A Living Museum

Arguably the best-preserved post town in all of Japan, Tsumago feels untouched by time. Wooden inns, paper lanterns, and narrow lanes evoke the Edo era so vividly that even powerlines are hidden from view. The locals take immense pride in keeping traditions alive, with heritage ryokans and sake shops still welcoming travellers as they did centuries ago.

**On our tour:** We explore this stunning post town on foot before continuing to our elegant stay at Taoya Kisoji, a beautiful modern ryokan-style hotel surrounded by nature. Here, guests can unwind in the open-air onsen, enjoy multi-course dining, and experience Japanese hospitality with all the comforts of today.

## Narai, The ‘Town of a Thousand Inns’

Once one of the wealthiest stops on the Nakasendo Way, Narai-juku stretches for over a kilometre with beautifully preserved dark-wood façades and merchant houses. Today, it’s home to lacquerware craftsmen, charming cafés, and local artisans. Don’t miss the Kiso Ohashi Bridge, an elegant wooden span built without nails.

**On our tour:** We explore Narai’s streets at leisure, with time to browse its traditional shops and enjoy a cup of matcha overlooking the Kiso River.

## Kiso Fukushima

Hot Springs & Castle Town Charm Located at the heart of the Kiso Valley, Kiso Fukushima was once an important checkpoint controlling travel on the highway. Today, it’s a blend of history and modern comfort, known for its onsen (hot springs) and samurai-era streets. The Yamamura Residence and Uenodan district offer a window into feudal-era Japan.

**On our tour:** Guests enjoy a guided sake tasting at a traditional local brewery, learning about centuries-old brewing methods while sampling regional varieties unique to the Kiso Valley. We then stay at the best ryokan in town, a charming riverside property where you can relax in an open-air onsen and indulge in a multi-course kaiseki dinner that celebrates local ingredients and seasonal flavours.

## Yabuhara, Gateway to the Torii Pass

A quieter post town surrounded by lush mountain landscapes, Yabuhara sits at the base of the Torii Pass, one of the most scenic climbs along the route. Once a hub for pilgrims and traders, it now offers a peaceful atmosphere and authentic charm away from the crowds.

**On our tour:** We hike over the historic Torii Pass, enjoying breathtaking views before descending into the tranquil town of Narai.

## Nojiri, A Hidden Gem

Often overlooked by larger post towns, Nojiri provides a glimpse of everyday rural life along the Nakasendo. Surrounded by rice fields and forested hills, it’s a place where the rhythm of old Japan still beats quietly.

**On our tour:** We pause here for a traditional lunch and enjoy the simplicity that defines Japan’s countryside charm.

In summary Life's An Adventure's 7-day Pack-Free Nakasendo Way walk brings Japan’s Edo-period highway to life through carefully chosen trails, boutique stays, and incredible local cuisine. With private transfers, flexible walking options, and expert local guides, you’ll enjoy the beauty of Japan’s heartland, without carrying a heavy pack, it why our customers consistently rate this tour 10 out of 10! The trip of a lifetime
