After a coffee break, we continue for another hour into the heart of Tasmania’s wilderness—Cradle Mountain.\n\nOur walk starts in the open button grass plains of Ronny Creek, following the trail toward the historic Waldheim Chalet. Nestled among ancient King Billy pines and moss-covered myrtles, the chalet holds deep historical significance as the birthplace of Cradle Mountain National Park. After exploring this atmospheric site, we continue past Lake Lilla where views of Cradle Mountain begin to reveal themselves.\n\nThe trail soon joins the Dove Lake Circuit, one of Tasmania’s most iconic walks. This scenic loop winds past the famous wooden boat shed, through the enchanting Ballroom Forest with its moss-draped myrtles, across secluded bays and along shoreline paths framed by dramatic mountain scenery. Throughout the walk, your guides will share fascinating stories about the region’s flora, fauna, geology and conservation legacy, helping bring this extraordinary landscape to life.\n\nAfter the walk, we transfer to our accommodation at Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge, a warm and welcoming retreat nestled in the wilderness. The optional summit section involves steep climbing, large boulders, hands-on scrambling and sections with exposure.\n\n**Walk itinerary**:\nEnjoy breakfast at the lodge before setting out on today’s spectacular journey. We begin by following the classic start of the famous Overland Track, gradually climbing through cool temperate forest to reach the moss-lined cascades of Crater Falls. Continuing upward, we arrive at the dark, mirror-like Crater Lake before the track steepens toward Marion’s Peak. From here, sweeping views stretch across the national park, and on a clear day, you may see as far as the Walls of Jerusalem plateau.\n\nA well-earned billy break at Kitchen Hut provides time to rest beneath the imposing dolerite ridges of Cradle Mountain. From this point, guests can choose between continuing the main circuit or taking on the challenging side trip to the summit.\n\n**Cradle Mountain Summit Option (weather permitting)**:\nFor the adventurous, the optional 3-hour return climb to the summit offers one of Tasmania’s most thrilling and rewarding experiences. This ascent involves rock climbing, boulder hopping and extended hands-on scrambling, and is only suitable for guests with excellent fitness and strong agility. At the summit, lunch is enjoyed with uninterrupted views across the Tasmanian Highlands—one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the state. The guide will assess weather and safety conditions on the day before approving the summit option.\n\nRejoining the main group, we continue our return journey via the dramatic dolerite peaks of Weindorfers Tower and Little Horn, before descending past the Twisted Lakes and Lake Hanson—two of the most enchanting alpine features in the Cradle Mountain landscape. This is widely regarded as one of Tasmania’s finest day walks.\n\nThis evening, we return to our accommodation and enjoy a superb dinner at the Highland Restaurant, featuring Tasmanian produce and local wines.\n\n**Accommodation**: Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge"
