I had previously travelled to Japan on a 2 week trip to major cities which left me wanting to experience Japanese culture more deeply. \nThis tour provided exactly what I was after. The guides, Hirome and Haruna, were superb. They were professional and knowledgeable, conducted the walks to accommodate all levels within the group and could not have been more helpful, caring or considerate. They helped us with chemists and medication when required, explained meals, accommodated dietary preferences, clarified dining and onsen etiquette, and extended their assistance to recommendations in Tokyo following the tour’s end, and advising of congested traffic conditions after the tour had finished. We felt they had become friends and I cannot compliment them highly enough. They are an enormous asset to the organisation.",

"description": "**Getting to Japan:**\nThis tour operates in both directions, from Kyoto to Tokyo or Tokyo to Kyoto. Guests starting in Kyoto will fly into Japan the day before the tour begins. The nearest international airport is Osaka, located just 13 minutes from Kyoto by Shinkansen (bullet train) or approximately 3 hours from Tokyo.\n\n**Distance & Terrain:**\n3.7 miles (6 kilometres), approximately 3 hours of walking, gently uphill and downhill on stone paths and forest trails.\n\n**Itinerary:**\nThis morning meet your guides at 9.00 am in the foyer of the Royal Park Sanjo Hotel Kyoto, ideally located in the cultural heart of the city. Our first experience sets the tone for the journey ahead with a visit to one of Japan’s most iconic and spiritual sites, the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Famous for its thousands of vermilion Torii gates, this enchanting walk winds through a tranquil forest and up a sacred hillside, creating a striking tunnel of colour and light. The atmosphere is serene and deeply spiritual, and the panoramic view of Kyoto from the summit is simply breathtaking. After the walk, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant featuring authentic Kyoto cuisine before returning to the hotel for a short rest. Later in the afternoon, we immerse ourselves in a timeless Japanese cultural tradition with a tea ceremony experience in kimonos. Dressed in exquisite silk kimonos of your choosing, and for the women, with your hair beautifully styled and adorned with flowers, you’ll learn the graceful rituals of the tea ceremony, an art form that embodies mindfulness, harmony, and respect. This memorable experience provides beautiful photo opportunities and a profound insight into Japanese hospitality and elegance. In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner at a local Kyoto restaurant, where you’ll savour a multi-course meal celebrating the delicate flavours of regional cuisine, accompanied by fine wine. It’s the perfect introduction to Japan’s rich culture, cuisine, and the spirit of the Nakasendo journey ahead.\n\n**Accommodation:** Royal Park Sanjo Hotel Kyoto"

Elevation gain 450 metres, descent 480 metres.\n\n** Itinerary:** After breakfast at the hotel, we travel by private vehicle from Kyoto to the peaceful post town of Hosokute-juku, one of the lesser-known yet most authentic stretches of the Nakasendo Trail. Today’s walk takes us from Hosokute-juku to Okute-juku, following the ancient route once used by samurai, merchants and pilgrims journeying between Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo). The path leads through quiet cypress forests and moss-covered stone-paved roads, passing shrines, weathered milestones, and charming thatched-roof farmhouses that tell the story of Japan’s Edo-period travellers. As we near Okute-juku, the forest opens to reveal sweeping views of the Gifu countryside, where rural fields and mountain ridges capture the timeless tranquillity of Japan’s heartland. At the conclusion of our walk, we meet our private vehicle and transfer to the nearby town of Ena for a special cultural experience, a hands-on Hiroshige ukiyo-e woodblock printmaking workshop. Guided by a local craftsman, learn about the history and artistry of this iconic Japanese technique and create your own colourful print to take home as a beautiful keepsake. Later, we check into Enakyo Onsen Hotel Yurisha, set above the scenic Kiso River and surrounded by forested hills. Relax in the natural onsen hot springs while taking in views over the gorge, then enjoy a traditional multi-course dinner showcasing fresh local ingredients, perfectly paired with regional wine.\n\n**Accommodation:** Enakyo Onsen Hotel Yuzuriha, Ena"

Elevation gain 200 metres, descent 380 metres.\n\n**Flexible Walking Option Summary:**\nGuests may choose to walk the full Magome to Tsumago route or select shorter sections, such as Magome-juku to Magome Pass (1.5 miles / 2.5 kilometres) or Magome Pass to Tsumago (3.4 miles / 5.5 kilometres).\n\n**Itinerary:**\nAfter a delicious breakfast, we begin our journey along one of the most picturesque stretches of the Nakasendo Trail. We start with a gentle stroll through Magome-juku, a beautifully preserved post town that feels like a step back in time. The cobblestone streets, wooden waterwheels, and traditional Edo-era inns capture the charm of historic Japan, offering a glimpse into the lives of travellers from centuries past. From Magome, the path gradually ascends through terraced fields and forested hills toward the Magome Pass, where panoramic views reveal the beauty of the Kiso Valley. Along the way, we stop at a traditional Japanese rest house, where friendly hosts dressed in period attire serve warm tea beside an open hearth, an intimate cultural moment that embodies the spirit of the old Nakasendo. The trail then descends through serene woodland, passing small shrines and a pair of cascading waterfalls before reaching Tsumago-juku, one of Japan’s best-preserved Edo-period villages. With its rustic inns, sake shops, and peaceful atmosphere, Tsumago feels like a living museum surrounded by lush forest and a meandering river. Today’s route takes us along the scenic Yogawamichi Path, a quieter and more remote alternative to the main road section, offering an intimate encounter with Japan’s unspoiled natural beauty. The trail winds gently through tranquil cedar forests and over mossy wooden bridges, following streams and pathways once used by Edo-era travellers. Elevation gain 250 metres, descent 250 metres.\n\n**Flexible Walking Option Summary:**\nGuests may walk the full 6-kilometre pilgrimage route or enjoy a shorter Ontake Waterfall Trail loop, covering 2.5 to 3 miles (4 to 5 kilometres) in around 3 hours, featuring gentle inclines and minimal stairs.\n\n**Itinerary:**\nAfter breakfast, we transfer through the breathtaking alpine landscapes of southern Nagano Prefecture to the sacred foothills of Mount Ontake, Japan’s second-highest volcano and one of its most revered spiritual peaks. Today’s walk follows an ancient pilgrimage trail, long visited by monks and mountain ascetics seeking enlightenment through nature. Our journey begins with a steep ascent along stone steps shaded by towering cedar trees, leading to the Omata Sansha, a monument honouring the Three Great Gods of Ontake. The trail continues through a serene forest adorned with Reijinhi, sacred stone carvings that mark sites of worship and purification. Each step along the path offers a quiet sense of reverence, connecting walkers with the centuries-old spirituality of the mountain. We pause at the Hanadofukando and Juni Gongen Shrines, before reaching the spectacular Shintaki Falls, cascading 50 metres into a tranquil pool below. These sacred falls are still used today for Shinto purification rituals, and you may see locals performing traditional cleansing ceremonies. The trail concludes at Kiyotaki Falls, another beautiful spiritual site and a fitting finale to this deeply moving walk. Afterwards, we transfer to the elegant Tsutaya Tokinoyado Retreat, a luxurious onsen ryokan surrounded by forest. Moderate terrain with forest trails, some stone paths and dirt tracks, and steady inclines to the pass. The journey from Yabuhara to Narai-juku via Torii Pass is one of the most scenic and historically significant sections of the Nakasendo Trail, once a key crossing point for travellers during the Edo period. The path meanders through peaceful forest landscapes where the sunlight filters through cedar and cypress trees, and the sound of birdsong fills the air. As we climb steadily toward Torii Pass, we pass several wooden torii gates, each a quiet marker of spiritual significance and a reminder of the pilgrims who have journeyed this way for centuries. At the top of the pass, sweeping views open across the Kiso Valley, revealing terraced hillsides, alpine peaks, and the timeless rhythm of rural Japan. Descending gently toward Narai, we emerge into one of Japan’s most beautifully preserved post towns. Often called the “Narai of a Thousand Houses,” this village is a living museum of Edo-era architecture, with charming inns, traditional lacquerware shops, and cobbled streets framed by dark wooden facades. Enjoy some free time to wander the narrow lanes, browse artisan crafts, or stop for matcha tea and sweets at one of the historic teahouses. Later this afternoon, we transfer to the peaceful resort town of Karuizawa, a beloved mountain retreat surrounded by forest and natural hot springs. Our accommodation tonight is the luxurious Ancient Hotel, a refined woodland sanctuary blending modern comfort with traditional Japanese elegance. I can’t find any fault with this tour, it proved to be above my expectations. The accommodation and food excellent. The combination of hiking and cultural activities was perfect. Hosts, especially Hiromi and John were excellent. Very knowledgeable and very caring towards every person in our group. I will definitely recommend LAA.

Wonderful! Having 2 guides is perfect so that those wanting to walk quickly can do so, but there is still a guide with the ones who like us wanted to walk slowly and take photos.

A fantastic walk exceeding our expectations. Haruna & Hiromi were exceptional in their knowledge of history & culture and ensuring we were well looked after. The walk was steep in parts but doable and the lengths were fine. Overall we had a great time with like-minded people. Thank you Life’s an Adventure.
