Our route leads into the spectacular North York Moors, a national park famed for its expansive purple heather, sweeping ridgelines and enormous skies. This remarkable landscape covers more than 1,436 square kilometres and holds some of the most iconic scenery in northern England.\n\nWe begin by walking through peaceful woodland before climbing steadily onto the northern escarpment of the moors. As we gain height, magnificent panoramic views open across the valleys and heather-clad hills. Following the natural curves of the ridge, we make our way to Carlton Bank, where we pause at the well-known Lord Stones Café for a well-earned break.\n\nAfterwards, the trail continues along rolling hilltops with far-reaching views in all directions, eventually descending to Clay Bank Top, where our vehicle awaits. From here, we transfer 30 minutes to our accommodation.\n\n**Accommodation**: Gisborough Hall Hotel or similar\nTonight we stay at the elegant Gisborough Hall Hotel, a 16th-century manor rich in old-world charm. Moderate grade with some rocky, uneven lochside sections.\n\n**Terrain**: A mix of lochside paths, woodland tracks and rocky shoreline sections. Includes short ascents and descents, tree roots, and narrow pathways typical of the West Highland region.\n\n**Itinerary**: After a hearty breakfast, we begin today’s walk from Rowardennan, following one of the most picturesque stretches of the West Highland Way. The route traces the famous “bonnie banks” of Loch Lomond, the largest body of freshwater by surface area in Britain. Stretching nearly 40 km (25 miles) and plunging to depths of 190 metres, Loch Lomond is framed by dense woodland, rugged shorelines and the rising slopes of Ben Lomond, creating constantly changing scenery as you walk.\n\nThe trail offers peaceful forested sections, shoreline boulder crossings and beautiful vantage points across the loch towards the Highland mountains. As we near Inversaid, the landscape becomes wilder, with waterfalls and rocky crags signalling our transition into the Highlands. Upon arrival, we pause at the local pub for refreshments.\n\nAfterwards, we board the ferry across the loch to Inveruglas, where our vehicle will meet us for a short transfer to the accommodation.\n\n**Accommodation**: Ardlui Hotel\nTonight we stay at the charming Ardlui Hotel, positioned on the northern banks of Loch Lomond with sweeping views down the length of the loch. Enjoy a relaxing evening and a delicious dinner in the hotel restaurant, perfectly complemented by superb wines."

"description": "**Walk grade**: Approximately 16 km / 9.9 miles. 4.5–5 hours walking with breaks. Easy to moderate grade along mostly level, historic trail.\n\n**Terrain**: A mix of wide gravel track, cobbled military road sections and gentle undulations. Scenic valley walking surrounded by Highland mountains. Generally firm underfoot with occasional uneven patches.\n\n**Itinerary**: Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before transferring back across the water. From here, we drive north and make a short stop at the Drovers Inn, one of Scotland’s most famous and eccentric pubs. Reputed to be haunted and filled with an eclectic collection of taxidermy, antique furniture and old armour, this lively inn offers a memorable glimpse into Highland history.\n\nToday’s walk covers nearly 16 km of mostly level walking along the historic Old Military Road, surrounded by sweeping Highland scenery. Much of this route follows centuries-old droving and military pathways. In the 17th and 18th centuries, as cattle rearing expanded across the Highlands, networks of drove roads were carved through the mountains, linking grazing lands to southern markets. Inns like the Drovers Inn were established to provide essential rest stops for drovers and their herds.\n\nThe walking today is peaceful and scenic, with long stretches tracing valleys framed by rugged peaks and broad open landscapes—classic West Highland Way terrain.\n\n**Accommodation**: Bridge of Orchy Hotel\nTonight we stay at the charming Bridge of Orchy Hotel, nestled in a tiny Highland hamlet beside the river and the historic stone bridge. This elegant and welcoming hotel provides a warm retreat after a rewarding day on the trail. Dinner this evening is prepared by Head Chef David Hetherington, showcasing exceptional local produce from Highland farmers."

A steady day of long-distance moorland walking.\n\n**Terrain**: A mix of well-formed gravel paths, wide open moorland track and sections of old military road. Mostly steady gradients with long, exposed stretches across wild, open country. Can be wet underfoot in places due to natural peat bogs. Expansive views throughout.\n\n**Itinerary**: After a hearty breakfast, we head out for our day’s walking adventure. Today’s route takes us from the Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse, crossing the legendary Rannoch Moor—the largest upland wilderness in Britain. This vast and hauntingly beautiful landscape is a mosaic of peat bogs, sparkling lochans, rocky outcrops and winding rivers. It is also home to an array of wildlife including curlews, red grouse and, if you are lucky, herds of red deer moving across the open moor.\n\nWidely considered the most remote and atmospheric section of the West Highland Way, this walk offers a deep sense of isolation and grandeur. The path is well-made but exposed, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding mountains and the ever-changing Highland sky.\n\nBy afternoon, the unmistakable silhouette of Buachaille Etive Mòr signals our approach to Kingshouse. Upon arrival, settle into the iconic Kingshouse Hotel, one of Scotland’s oldest coaching inns, framed by the dramatic peaks of Glencoe. Relax by the cosy fires and take in the extraordinary mountain views from the lounge and dining spaces.\n\nTonight, enjoy dinner in the stylish Kingshouse Restaurant, indulging in exceptional cuisine crafted from local Scottish produce, perfectly paired with fine wines.\n\n**Accommodation**: Kingshouse Hotel"

Moderate grade.\n\n**Easier option**: Walk 9 km / 5.6 miles from Altnafeadh including the Devil’s Staircase. Moderate grade.\n\n**Terrain**: Well-formed gravel track and historic military road with a steady ascent to the Devil’s Staircase followed by a long descent into Kinlochleven. Expect uneven rocky paths, open mountain landscapes and exposed sections with expansive views.\n\n**Itinerary**: After breakfast, we head out for another exceptional day of walking through dramatic Highland scenery. Today’s route begins gently as we make our way towards the towering Glencoe hills, with wide-open views that expand with every step. Soon we reach the start of the iconic Devil’s Staircase, the highest point on the West Highland Way. Despite its intimidating name, the ascent of roughly 260 metres is steady and achievable, following a zig-zagging military road built by soldiers in the 1750s.\n\nFrom the pass at 548 metres, the reward is remarkable. On clear days, views stretch across the Glencoe peaks and north towards Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. After taking in the panorama, we begin a long descent across rugged mountainside before meeting a steeper track that leads us down into Kinlochleven, a village surrounded by dramatic ridgelines and deep glens.\n\nNo day in Glencoe feels complete without a visit to the famous Clachaig Inn, where the Boots Bar offers the perfect spot for refreshments before returning to our accommodation.\n\nThis evening we return to the superb Kingshouse Hotel, where a delicious dinner awaits, served with wine and views of the surrounding mountains.\n\n**Accommodation**: Kingshouse Hotel"

Mostly even surfaces with occasional rocky sections.\n\n**Itinerary**: After breakfast, we transfer to the start of our final walk—an inspiring finish to the West Highland Way with views towards the mighty Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in Britain. Today’s gentle trail leads us through the beautiful Glen Nevis valley, passing filming locations from the movie Braveheart and showcasing some of the Highlands’ most dramatic scenery.\n\nAs we approach Glen Nevis, the landscape opens into sweeping meadows framed by towering peaks. We conclude our walk at the Ben Nevis Inn, where we gather for a well-earned celebratory lunch beneath the shadow of the mountain.\n\nAfter lunch, we make the short transfer to Fort William, the official end point of the West Highland Way. Here, you’ll have time to take photos at the trail’s finishing sculpture in the pedestrian high street and browse the charming local shops for souvenirs of your journey.\n\nIn the afternoon, we begin our return journey to Glasgow (approximately 2.5 hours), with drop-off at the hotel at around 6.00 pm—the perfect close to a remarkable and memorable adventure."
